We have two other Billing Specialists who focus on patient billing, and you will focus on insurance billing for our Santa Barbara practice. With 18 operatories, this is one of the largest dental practices on the Central Coast. We see about 100 patients a day and about half have insurance -- you can count on a steady stream of work.

In a nutshell, you will follow up on outstanding claims, finding out why they haven't been paid, resolving any issues, resubmitting claims and generally doing what it takes to get a claim paid.

Why Johnson Family Dental

We want you to love it here
We get it: great employees are essential to our success. That's why we provide the tools and support to help ensure you enjoy your role. You'll have the opportunity to attend a variety of training sessions, often with the dentists, hygienists and front office staff, and you'll find the people here happy to share knowledge and help you learn.

Great environment
We make a point of cultivating a culture that is motivating, positive and fun. For example, everyone has performance goals, and we provide incentives to keep things interesting. Communication is open and politics are minimal. While the entire organization includes more than 80 people, we have a strong family feeling -- after all, "family" is in our name. We also organize get-togethers, such as luaus and beach barbeques.

Leading edge offices
As dental technology changes, we do too, using the latest technology to give our patients the most accurate information and best results. This applies in our Business Service Center as well. We are chartless, for example, and we're always looking for better tools and ways to maximize effectiveness and efficiency.

Commitment to community
At Johnson Family Dental we believe that community involvement is at our core. That's why we support a number of organizations and organize our own activities to support our communities. A few examples:
  • Since 2010 we have been an official corporate sponsor of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), and help raise funds to find a cure for Type 1 diabetes. In 2012 alone we raised over $20,000.
  • Little Hearts, Big Smiles is one of two free dental days we offer each year. We provide a free cleaning and fluoride treatment for children ages 1 to 13. We also teach them about good dental hygiene habits, and show them that visiting the dentist doesn't have to be scary.
  • The second free dental day is Dentistry with Love, which is described in the video at right.
  • During the week following Halloween, we hold our Cash for Candy event. We invite kids to come in and sell their Halloween candy to us for $2 dollars per pound. In turn, we donate the candy to Operation Gratitude, an organization that sends it to our troops serving overseas.
  • We support dozens of local organizations, including the Santa Barbara Police Officers Association; Camarillo Youth Football, Inc.; Adopt a Family, Solvang; Ventura High School and many others.
Excellent compensation
In addition to a competitive wage, we offer comprehensive benefits, which become active after a probationary period, including health and dental insurance, a 401(k) plan, and more.

Video: Dentistry with Love is just one of the ways we give back to the community. Two days a year we offer free dental care to anyone in the communities we serve. It's appreciated by the recipients, of course, but our staff also gets a great deal of satisfaction from volunteering for the events.

Keys to Success

We're proud of the positive atmosphere in the Business Service Center and our various practices, but it doesn't just happen -- everyone actively supports that atmosphere, and we'll look to you to remain upbeat. You should be able to find the silver lining even when things get tough. To excel in this role you will remain open to learning; if you have dental billing experience, you know not only that billing codes are different, but also that different insurance companies have different requirements. You should be proactive about getting up to speed as quickly as possible, and if you have a question, you should take the initiative to ask.

In addition, in order to be an outstanding Dental Billing Specialist, you will:
  • Pay robust attention to details.
  • Maintain regular attendance and establish a reputation for dependability.
  • Always represent the practice in a professional, pleasant and cooperative manner.
  • Handle multiple tasks and deadlines comfortably and efficiently.
  • Achieve goals independently and also contribute cooperatively to team activities.
  • Remain flexible as your job evolves, and be willing to help out in other areas of the office.
  • Practice active listening, giving full attention to others.
